Rancic a 'wreck' before breast cancer reveal

ANN CURRY, co-host: Back now at 8:10 with Giuliana Rancic from our sister network E! This morning she's here to share some very personal news. But first, her story. For nine years she has been the E! network celebrity news personality. A staple at red carpet events.

Ms. GIULIANA RANCIC (E! News): We've learned a little bit more about you tonight. Thank you very much .

CURRY: Saying what's hot and what's not on the show " Fashion Police ."

Ms. RANCIC: All right. So we have been watching the fashions, we've been talking about them all night.

CURRY: And co-host of the wildly popular "E!_News" reporting the latest celebrity scoop.

Ms. RANCIC: They saved their biggest secrets for us.

CURRY: It was here she interviewed season one "Apprentice" winner Bill Rancic .

CURRY: They fell in love, married, and since 2009 have chronicled their lives on the Style network show "Giuliana Bill," a popular reality show that highlights the couple's married life and their struggle with infertility.

CURRY: Including Giuliana 's two in-vitro fertilization treatments, one which resulted in a miscarriage when she was eight weeks along.

CURRY: Three weeks ago in the season finale Bill and Giuliana decided to try again seeking treatment from a leading IVF clinic in Denver leaving everyone to wonder whether it would work this time.

CURRY: Giuliana Rancic , good morning.

Ms. RANCIC: Good morning, Ann.

CURRY: Your fans listening right now and watching are expecting you to possibly announce that you might be pregnant .

Ms. RANCIC: Yes.

CURRY: But you have other news.

Ms. RANCIC: I do have other news. Through my attempt to get pregnant for the third time through IVF , we sadly found out that I have early stages of breast cancer , so, and it's been a shock because I recently found this out. And a Lot of people have been asking, you know, we saw in the season finale of your show that you went and got IVF , so what happened. Are you pregnant ? But sadly, we've had to put that off because of the news.

CURRY: How you found out is important here.

Ms. RANCIC: It is important, and it's a pretty amazing story. When we went to do the third round of IVF , this doctor -- the only doctor who's ever said this to me said, you need a mammogram . And I said, 'Why, I'm 36 years old. Why would I need a mammogram ? I'm too young.' And he said, 'I don't care if you're 26, 36. But I will not get you pregnant if possibly the small risk that you have cancer.' Because if you get pregnant it can accelerate the cancer. All the hormones will accelerate the cancer. And so I went and got a mammogram .

CURRY: You argued first against it.

Ms. RANCIC: I did.

CURRY: You didn't want that mammogram . Said why do I need this mammogram ?

Ms. RANCIC: Absolutely. I mean, I wasn't prepared to get a mammogram until I was 40 years old, like I've been told. And so I never in my wildest dreams expected anything would be wrong. And so I did go kicking and screaming to get a mammogram , to be honest. And I went, they called me the next day and they said, 'We need you to come back, we see something.' And I remember where I was when I heard that. I was driving to work and it was just a kick in the stomach. And I knew something was wrong. And I went in and they did, indeed, see something. But now, I was just a few days away from going to Colorado to get IVF . I was on day seven or eight of my medications. And I said, what am I supposed to do? And they said, go ahead, go to Colorado , do the retrieval, which is the first part of IVF where they retrieve the embryos, and then you can't get pregnant . We cannot let you get pregnant . Then you come back, we'll biopsy you and we'll see exactly where you are.

CURRY: The mammogram was on the 11th, your birthday was on the 17th, and a few days later...

Ms. RANCIC: Yes.

CURRY: ...you found out the words when the doctors said those words to you.

Ms. RANCIC: That's right .

CURRY: They're empathful words. How are you doing emotionally?

Ms. RANCIC: I'm OK. I mean, that was definitely the hardest day. I went in, you know, to the hospital in LA. And when they came in to tell me they said it pretty quickly. And they just said, I'm sorry, you have breast cancer . And I just remember, Ann , it's like -- it's what you expect but so much more. I mean, it was like incredible instant sobbing and it was like the world just crashed down around me. And I just couldn't believe it. I mean, 36 years old, no family history. I mean, I just couldn't believe it.

CURRY: Eighty-five percent of breast cancer diagnoses are for people who don't have any prior history. You did have an aunt, though, I understand who had breast cancer .

Ms. RANCIC: I do have an aunt. But I was tested for the breast cancer gene and I don't have a breast -- the breast cancer gene, thank God .

CURRY: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

Ms. RANCIC: But that's the thing, I don't have a mother or a sister. I don't -- you don't see it a lot in my family, I just have the one aunt who had it but is a survivor and is very, you know, perfect right now.

CURRY: Your husband, Bill ...

Ms. RANCIC: Yeah.

CURRY: ...who we've been watching in this reality show , how much has his support meant to you during this time?

Ms. RANCIC: Well, it's been everything. I mean, Bill is unbelievable. The best part about Bill is he lets me cry when I want to cry and doesn't say, 'Hey, look at that person who's worse off than you are.' He just -- he just lets me feel what I'm feeling. And I think that's very important for a spouse to do.

CURRY: You know, I can't help but notice that during this interview and leading up to it, you know, you've been shaking a little bit.

Ms. RANCIC: Yeah.

CURRY: This is still so new.

Ms. RANCIC: Yeah.

CURRY: And yet you wanted to come in on this broadcast and talk about it.

Ms. RANCIC: Yeah.

CURRY: In part because you want to give a message to woman.

Ms. RANCIC: Oh, absolutely. I mean, I think a lot of us think we're invincible, you know. And women these days, we're busier than ever. We're multitasking, we're taking care of a million people a day and a million things a day. But we have to start putting ourselves on the to-do list. You know, and, you know, I had a friend call me yesterday. And she said, I'm so sorry. Can I do anything for you? And I go, honestly, just don't feel sorry for me. Instead just call your doctor tomorrow, make an appointment. That's what you could do for me. You know what I mean ? And I just want women out there to know that you -- if you can just find it early, you will -- you know, you could be OK.

CURRY: Mm-hmm.

Ms. RANCIC: I will be OK because I found it early.

CURRY: Do you need radiation?

Ms. RANCIC: I do, sadly.

CURRY: And you are going to still push to have a baby?

Ms. RANCIC: Yeah. So I do six -- I'm doing surgery this coming week. And then I go to radiation for six and a half weeks. And then, yeah, I mean, I'm not going to give up. You know, I want that baby. And what's amazing is that that baby will have saved my life. Because I've always said that this all happened to me, there was some master plan of why my IVFs didn't work, why I never got pregnant . And now I truly believe that, you know, God was looking out for me. And even when I would ask him why is this happening to me? Why can't you give me a baby? Now I know he was actually looking out for me. Because had I gotten pregnant a few years down the line I could be a lot sicker, you know, so right now I'm OK. And so this baby will have saved my life.

CURRY: Giuliana Rancic , we wish you every luck.

Ms. RANCIC: Thank you.

CURRY: You and Bill.

Ms. RANCIC: Thank you.

CURRY: Thank you for talking to us this morning.

Ms. RANCIC: Thank you, Ann. Thank you.

CURRY: Being able to help other people.
