Tesco Lotus will first offer this service on the Internet before launching it as a mobile phone application.
Salinla said the company first wanted to run market trials before setting a target for online sales. She explained that it was difficult to set an income estimate from online sales because shopping on the Net was still new for Thai consumers, but said she believes it will boost sales in the long run.
Tesco Lotus is already offering online shopping and home delivery in several countries such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, South Korea, the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia. Thailand would be the first country in the Asean region for Tesco to offer online services. Salinla said the Thai market was attractive because of the boom in smart-phone usage and rising numbers of Internet users.
Salinla added that the success of other online businesses under the Tesco Group showed that consumer demands were changing since many people did not have time to go shopping in stores.
Sean Hur, chief of online business for the Home Plus Group - which is a joint venture between Tesco and South Korea's Samsung - said more Korean consumers were preferring to shop online.
"Nowadays, more than 60 per cent of the South Korean population uses smart-phones so we cannot just rely on our store for sales, but need to adopt technology and use applications," Hur said.
Home Plus launched its home-shopping website in 2002, and now has more than 35,000 products on its virtual shelf. It also has 408 delivery vans and 565 pickers - people who fill the orders - for the service, which is mostly used by consumers in their 20s and 30s.
In 2011, Home Plus launched a mobile application which has been downloaded by more than 1.4 million smart-phone users so far, and up to 55,000 customers access it daily. Hur said the firm hopes at least 2 million will have downloaded the application by the end of this year.
Do Won Seaol, vice president of Home Plus Group, said the firm |was confident it would catch up with its biggest competitor - E Mart - in the next few years. Home Plus is South Korea's second-largest modern trader.
