Dr Yaqoob Khan Bangash, Chairperson of the Department of History at FC College, presented a paper titled ?Constructing a State: Constitutional Integration of the Princely States in Pakistan, 1947-73,? at the 22nd European Conference for South Asian Studies in Lisbon, Portugal on July 27th, 2012.
The paper traced the largely unknown, long drawn and complicated constitutional construction of Pakistan. The paper talked about how a large part of western Pakistan was composed of princely states which remained at different levels of integration for a long time. The paper also argued that the long drawn process, lack of any clear policy, and the primacy of security concerns, prevented the creation of a consolidated and coherent country, leading to the rise of regional divisions.
The paper formed a part of a larger panel on Pakistan, which included ten papers on different aspects of state formation and identity politics in Pakistan. The Conference was organized by the European South Asian Studies Association, one of the largest of such associations.
The Conference continued over four days and included more than fifty panels. Over a hundred papers were presented on a wide variety of topics related to South Asia. Professor Bangash was one of a handful of scholars from Pakistan whose paper was accepted for presentation at the conference.
