OK, we?re finishing up our summer vacation to the Ozarks today (or this account of it at least).? When I asked my parents if they wanted to contribute, my mom really liked the idea.? She doesn?t consider herself a writer, so she spent some time writing up some notes and asked me to take it from there.? To her credit, there were few to no spelling errors, etc., but per her wishes this one will be in my voice.? And if my dad already covered it, then you can read about it in the last post instead of me repeating it here.
On Sunday after my hubby and I left with the two little ones, my parents were also getting ready to leave.? My mom was headed to a baby shower, and to the boys? relief my dad wasn?t going so took them to the river instead!? The girls enjoyed the shower, but got really excited on the way home.? My mom needed to stop at the store for a few things, and so asked the girls what they would need to buy to make enchiladas!? They collected the ingredients, and also requested my mom make her famous (at least in our family) Orange Up-Sidaisies.?? With the necessary items purchased, they headed home.
At home, a quick call was made across the river to my grandparents? home.? They have a family (or two or three) of raccoons that they feed most evenings, and my parents knew the children would really enjoy that.? They drove over, and the evening was not disappointing.? There were several big raccoons as well as six baby coons!? They watched until the coons had eaten their fill.? By the time they returned home it was much later than their normal bedtime.? ?So far everyone had done well and had not shown any signs of ?homesickness.?? Then D-boy came into the kitchen and my mom started to get worried as he spoke.? He had a very serious look on his face and asked her when we would be coming back.? She thought perhaps he was missing us already, so she grabbed the calendar and circled Wednesday, telling him this was the day we?d come back and told him they could put an X on each day that passed until then.? She realized her fears were unfounded, though, when she heard D-boy?s reaction.? ?Oh mannnn!? Only two more days?? I want to stay here for a week, for a lot of days!? Why do they have to come so soon????? Can I live here? ?Can you home school me like you did your kids??? We all had a good laugh about that later.
Monday morning was met with tired but happy kids because it was canoeing day! C-girl helped my mom make those Orange Up-Sidaisies for breakfast, as well as some hot cereal (I forgot to ask if that involved D-boy eating some oatmeal!).? The morning consisted of preparing to go canoeing (loading the canoes, gathering paddles, life jackets, etc).? As soon as lunch was done they headed for the water.? My dad tells of how that trip went, but my mom thought it was funny when they were getting in.? B-boy was helping everyone else get into the canoes and push off, and had intended to go in a canoe himself (rather than a kayak).? Suddenly, he realized he had just pushed off the last canoe and the only thing left for him was a kayak!? He got in it and had a bit of? a hard time getting started, but with some helpful advice was soon on his way.? Necessity is often the best teacher.? After that trip and supper no one complained when bedtime came around.
Tuesday was caving day! ?The kids were so excited to get going, but not everything on a farm can be put on hold just because the grandkids come to visit!? My dad spent the morning working on some things he needed to do, then set about finding headlamps for everyone.? In the meantime, A-girl was in the kitchen preparing her delicious feast of enchiladas.? My mom said she really enjoyed a little break from the cooking, but of course was watching and learning how to cook this meal the more authentic way.? They all agreed that A-girl is a wonderful cook.
The caving experience as well as the county fair the next day you?ve already heard about.? After the fair though, they decided to let the kids spend some money they had given them (isn?t this one of the ?best? things about grandparents?). ?Time flew by and soon it was late, very late.? They decided to eat again before heading back to the farm.? My dad though, has an insatiable sweet tooth, so they decided to make a quick stop and get some 49 cent ice-cream first.? I must say that I appreciate them calling me and ensuring that this was something we would allow.? I just told them that the kids were theirs until they got home.? The real food was the next stop, and they had a wonderful time just eating together and talking about all the things they had done and seen that day.? Suddenly everyone heard a loud ?HEY!? coming from my dad.? They all looked up to see my dad with hot-sauce splattered all over the side of his face and his glasses.? D-boy, who is quite toothless at the moment, was sitting beside my dad while trying to open the little packet.? He couldn?t tear it with his teeth so his next option was to fold it in half and then bite it.? Effective, but those nearby should definitely wear rain gear! ?No one thought to grab a camera at that moment, sorry. ?Fortunately the cleanup was not too difficult, and soon enough they were on the road headed back to the farm. ?Then the ice-cream kicked in and the silliness started to get really silly.? My dad quickly downloaded the pictures from the day onto his laptop and put on a slide show for them to watch.? That quieted them down, and ten minutes after the pictures stopped A-girl pipes up, ?I want to know your secret for getting them all to go to sleep in the car.? It can come in handy!?
The next morning it was time to head home, and I just had to quote what my mom said here:
Thursday morning was a sad morning because they all had to leave and go home. It was raining outside when they left, and in my heart also. We were sad to see them go. After they left we just sat for a few minutes?and then realized how exhausted we both were! We are not used to the daily pace that having kids around requires. We look forward to their next visit.
The kids were not ready to leave either, and are already asking when we can go back.? The trip home was long though uneventful. ?But we did have a few things left to look forward to before school started, like another birthday and my hubby?s and my anniversary!
