The buzz: Flying robots may get bee brains

4 hrs.

Flying robots of the future may have the smarts of bees, a level of artificial intelligence with potential applications ranging from search and rescue missions to mechanical pollination of crops.

The first step in the Green Brain project underway at a pair of British universities is to develop accurate computer models of the neural systems that govern honey bee vision and sense of smell.?

Such smarts would, eventually, allow the team to build a flying robot that can sense and act as autonomously as a bee instead of carrying out a set of pre-programmed instructions.

The $1.3 million project is led by James Marshall at the University of Sheffield in collaboration with the University of Sussex.

According to a news release, understanding the brain of the socially complex honey bee is an alternative approach to artificial intelligence research, where other teams have focused on the brains of rats, monkeys and humans.

The bee brain is smaller and more accessible than any vertebrate brain, Marshall explained.?

In addition to building intelligent, autonomous robots, the research may lead to discoveries about what is causing wild honey bee populations around the world to plummet.?

Or, at least, contribute to the development of mechanical pollinators such as the Robobees project at Harvard University.

Tesco Lotus eyes online grocery sales - The Nation

"It should offer additional marketing opportunities, help boost sales as well as meet changing consumer lifestyles in Thailand," Salinla Seehaphan, corporate affairs director of Ek-Chai Distribution System, said.

Tesco Lotus will first offer this service on the Internet before launching it as a mobile phone application.

Salinla said the company first wanted to run market trials before setting a target for online sales. She explained that it was difficult to set an income estimate from online sales because shopping on the Net was still new for Thai consumers, but said she believes it will boost sales in the long run.

Tesco Lotus is already offering online shopping and home delivery in several countries such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, South Korea, the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia. Thailand would be the first country in the Asean region for Tesco to offer online services. Salinla said the Thai market was attractive because of the boom in smart-phone usage and rising numbers of Internet users.

Salinla added that the success of other online businesses under the Tesco Group showed that consumer demands were changing since many people did not have time to go shopping in stores.

Sean Hur, chief of online business for the Home Plus Group - which is a joint venture between Tesco and South Korea's Samsung - said more Korean consumers were preferring to shop online.

"Nowadays, more than 60 per cent of the South Korean population uses smart-phones so we cannot just rely on our store for sales, but need to adopt technology and use applications," Hur said.

Home Plus launched its home-shopping website in 2002, and now has more than 35,000 products on its virtual shelf. It also has 408 delivery vans and 565 pickers - people who fill the orders - for the service, which is mostly used by consumers in their 20s and 30s.

In 2011, Home Plus launched a mobile application which has been downloaded by more than 1.4 million smart-phone users so far, and up to 55,000 customers access it daily. Hur said the firm hopes at least 2 million will have downloaded the application by the end of this year.

Do Won Seaol, vice president of Home Plus Group, said the firm |was confident it would catch up with its biggest competitor - E Mart - in the next few years. Home Plus is South Korea's second-largest modern trader.

Smartphone technology acceptable for telemedicine

ScienceDaily (Oct. 1, 2012) ? A new Mayo Clinic study confirms the use of smartphones medical images to evaluate stroke patients in remote locations through telemedicine. The study, the first to test the effectiveness of smartphone teleradiology applications in a real-world telestroke network, was recently published in Stroke, a journal of the American Heart Association.

"Essentially what this means is that telemedicine can fit in our pockets," says Bart Demaerschalk, M.D., professor of Neurology, and medical director of Mayo Clinic Telestroke. "For patients this means access to expertise in a timely fashion when they need it most, no matter what emergency room they may find themselves."

Mayo Clinic was the first medical center in Arizona to do pioneering clinical research to study telemedicine to serve patients with stroke in non-urban settings. Today, Mayo Clinic is the hub in a network of 12 other spoke centers, all but one in Arizona. In telestroke care, the use of telemedicine platforms or robots located in a rural hospital lets a stroke patient be seen in real time by a neurology specialist who typically is working from a desktop or laptop computer in Phoenix. The Mayo Clinic stroke neurologist, whose face appears on a computer screen, consults with emergency room physicians at the rural sites and evaluates the patient.

Patients showing signs of stroke can be examined by the neurologist who can also view scans of the patient's brain to detect possible damage from a hemorrhage or blocked artery. If necessary patients can be administered clot-busting medications within the narrow window of time necessary to minimize permanent injury to the brain. The study compared the quality of medical images using a particular smartphone application to the same types of information and images typically viewed via desktop computers. Mayo Clinic neurologists worked with emergency physicians and radiologists at Yuma Regional Medical Center to compare brain scan images from 53 patients who came to that medical center with stroke.

The scans were reviewed by radiologists in Yuma and a separate adjudication panel of stroke neurologists to determine the level of agreement between these traditional interpretation routes and new images and scans on smartphones interpreted by telestroke doctors. The study shows there was a high level of agreement (92 to 100 percent) among all the reviewers over the most important radiological features.

"Smartphones are ubiquitous, they are everywhere," Dr. Demaerschalk says. "If we can transmit health information securely and simultaneously use the video conferencing capabilities for clinical assessments, we can have telemedicine anywhere, which is essential in a state like Arizona where more than 40 percent of the population doesn't have access to immediate neurologic care."

The study was funded by the Arizona Department of Health Services and the technology and technical assistance was provided by Calgary Scientific, the maker of ResolutionMD. The Mayo Clinic Telestroke Network includes hospitals in Kingman, Flagstaff, Parker, Cottonwood, Show Low, Globe, Yuma, Bisbee, Casa Grande, Tuba City and Phoenix, all in Arizona; and a hospital in St. Joseph, Mo. To date, more than 1,000 emergency consultations have taken place for stroke between Mayo Clinic stroke neurologists and physicians at the spoke centers. Such comprehensive evaluation techniques lead to appropriate life-saving treatment for stroke, and have resulted in significant cost reductions by not requiring ground or air ambulance transfer of the patient to another medical center.

Reduced glaucoma risk found in patients who take statins

ScienceDaily (Oct. 1, 2012) ? People who take statins to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease are less likely to be diagnosed with the most common form of glaucoma, according to a nationwide study of more than 300,000 patients. A University of Michigan School of Medicine research team, directed by Joshua Stein, MD, MS, found that the risk for glaucoma was reduced by eight percent in patients who took statins continuously for two years, compared with patients who did not take statins.

The study, the largest to date on the topic, is published in the October issue of Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Stein's study was sparked by growing evidence that statin use may protect the optic nerve and retinal nerve fibers, structures that are essential to good vision and are damaged by glaucoma. His team used healthcare claims data for a diverse population of Americans aged 60 and older who took statins to control high blood levels of unhealthy fats, a condition known as hyperlipidemia, between 2001 and 2009, The researchers assessed patients' risk for open-angle glaucoma (OAG). Unlike earlier studies, their analysis adjusted for patients who also had diabetes and/or hypertension to prevent distortion of the results.

Several of the study's findings suggest that statin use may be most important before glaucoma is diagnosed, or in the early stages of the disease. Dr. Stein's research may lead to new preventive treatments that could especially benefit groups at increased risk, including African-Americans, Hispanics and those with a family history of glaucoma.

Glaucoma affects more than 2.7 million Americans age 40 and older . If untreated, glaucoma causes vision loss or blindness by damaging the eye's optic nerve. The optic nerve sends signals from the retina -- a layer of light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye -- to the brain, where these signals are interpreted as the images we see. Only about half of the people who have glaucoma know it, since symptoms are rarely noticed in the early stages and vision loss is very gradual in most cases.

"Statins' apparent ability to reduce glaucoma risk may be due to several factors, including improved blood flow to the optic nerve and retinal nerve cells and enhanced outflow of the aqueous fluid, which may reduce intraocular pressure," said Dr. Stein. "While more research is needed, we hope our results may contribute to saving the sight of thousands who are predisposed to glaucoma."

Dr. Stein cautioned that the study results apply only to patients with hyperlipidemia, and that further study is needed to determine whether statins also protect patients who don't have this diagnosis or have other characteristics that differ from the study population.

Obama trying to avoid miscue in first debate

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) ? President Barack Obama has one mission heading into his first debate with Republican Mitt Romney: Don't screw things up.

Less than five weeks from Election Day, Obama has political momentum and an edge in polls of the battleground states that will determine the election. But he's sure to face a blistering challenge from Romney, who needs to use Wednesday's debate in Denver to change the trajectory of the race.

Both parties say the first debate traditionally helps the challenger, whose stature tends to rise in the eyes of many voters by simply appearing on stage as the alternative. Seeking to mitigate that effect, Obama aides are working with the president on keeping command of the debate while not being overly aggressive.

The president retreated to a desert resort in Nevada for three days of intensive debate preparation for Wednesday night. He was joined by a cadre of top advisers, who are focused on helping Obama trim his often-lengthy explanations to fit the debate format. Equally important is coaching Obama to look calm and presidential during an onslaught of criticism from Romney.

Obama's campaign has tried ? to the point of hyperbole ? to lower expectations for the president and portray him as an underdog who hasn't had enough time to get ready.

"He has had less time to prepare than we anticipated," campaign spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki said Sunday. "It's difficult to schedule significant blocks of time when you're the president."

What the expectation-lowering aides leave out is that Obama, in fact, has had plenty of time to prepare at the White House and during long flights on Air Force One. And they never mention that only Obama, not Romney, has more experience with general election debates.

The president's aides also have tried to set sky-high expectations for Romney, casting him as a strong debater who won the GOP nomination in part because of the way he dispatched his many competitors in the crucial primary debates.

"Mitt Romney ... has been preparing earlier and with more focus than any presidential candidate in modern history," Psaki said. "Not John F. Kennedy, not President Bill Clinton, not President George Bush, not Ronald Reagan has prepared as much as he has."

The most pressing task for Obama, who once taught law at the University of Chicago, is shedding his often wordy, detailed explanations in favor of tighter answers. Aides say Obama isn't coming prepared with a series of "zingers," just more concise descriptions of his positions and his criticisms of Romney's.

Despite Obama's reputation as a gifted speaker, his 2008 debate performances were uneven.

He stumbled in several multicandidate forums during the early days of the 2008 campaign, with his most prominent low point coming when Obama said, with a touch of sarcasm, that rival Hillary Rodham Clinton was "likable enough." But the debates that fall against Republican John McCain helped Obama fend off suggestions that he was too inexperienced for the White House and show that he had what it took to be president.

Obama aides have been reviewing Romney's debates, both in the 2008 and 2012 Republican primaries and from his statewide races in Massachusetts. They've also been studying recordings of prior presidential debates for signs of what pitfalls could face an incumbent.

Aides say they've noticed Romney often launches a fresh critique against his opponent early in the debates, something that hasn't been part of the campaign discussion thus far. During a primary debate earlier this year, Romney caught rival Newt Gingrich off-guard by bringing up investments he held in mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Aides also are prepping the president for a moment they say Romney has already telegraphed: Accusing the president of lying about the Republicans' positions.

"This is a guy who will not back off delivering the negative and that's not the easiest thing to do," said Tad Devine, a Democratic strategist who is not working with Obama's team but advised the late Massachusetts Sen. Edward M. Kennedy in his 1994 Senate campaign against Romney.

Obama and Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, who is playing Romney, have held several lengthy debate preparation sessions at the Democratic National Committee headquarters, a short drive away from the White House. Former White House aides Anita Dunn and Ron Klain have been brought in to help run the sessions.

Obama's preparations here in Nevada are expected to mirror his approach from 2008, when he got ready for the first debate against McCain at a hotel in Palm Beach, Fla. Obama's campaign held daylong preparation sessions that included mock debates starting at 9 p.m., the same time as the actual debate. The practice debates were held on a replica of the debate stage "practically right down to the carpeting," White House adviser David Plouffe wrote in his 2009 book, "The Audacity to Win."

The president's team picked Nevada for this year's debate camp in part because it's one of the eight or so battleground states that will determine the election. Obama held a campaign rally in Las Vegas Sunday night and plans to make a few stops around the area during his stay, all aimed at driving local media coverage.

Others leading Obama's debate prep include senior campaign adviser David Axelrod, White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer and top economic adviser Gene Sperling. Obama's chief of staff Jack Lew, campaign pollster Joel Benenson and speechwriter Jon Favreau are also assisting the president.

High school food fight ends with felony charge

A Phoenix-area high school student faces a felony charge after a senior prank food fight got out of hand.

The messy food fight in May happened during the lunch hour at Horizon High School in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Prosecutors have charged the teen with aggravated assault on a teacher, according to azfamily.com. Aggravated assault is a felony.

The student, who was a freshman at the time of the incident, told the TV station he was trying to leave the cafeteria when he was tackled by two teachers.

"I was in defense mode, I was in fetal position, I was shocked. ... I'm on my back getting hit in my left side right in the gut," he said.
The teen is now a sophomore at a different school.

According to the police report, one teacher said the student tackled and knocked him to the ground.

A grainy cellphone video shows the young man, in a bright yellow shirt, on the ground and the teachers hovering over him. The short clip does not show what happened before the student was on the ground.

The county prosecutor is moving forward with the charge, which could lead to a trial because the teen did not admit fault and accept a diversion program, which would have dropped the charge, azfamily.com reports.

Jason Lamm, the student's attorney, said, "[My client] didn't do anything wrong. He didn't assault that teacher?in fact it's the opposite. So there was no reason to admit responsibility and therefore he wasn't going to participate in diversion."

Horizon High School issued a statement last week saying, "The county attorney's office acted appropriately to investigate and hold any individuals accountable for their actions." The school noted, too, the food fight was "a dangerous, physical assault that put the safety of hundreds of students and staff members at risk."
