Crowdsourced Documentary of Egyptian Revolt Uses Twitter To Get Footage

After the revolution that successfully ousted former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak,?Egyptian filmmaker?Amr Salama set out to create a film depicting the spirit of activism of the demonstrators?at Tahrir Square.?The film,?Tahrir Square: The Good, The Bad, The Politician, is a collaborative project by Salama and two other filmmakers. The most fascinating detail is that Salama gathered over 300 gigabytes of documentary video of demonstrations for material by pulling from Twitter. Salama explains:

Everyone was using cell phones to shoot pictures and videos and put it online; everyone was making videos to show how the regime was corrupted and tell how they were dealing with it?[the film] tries to understand?how the decisions were made, how Mubarak turned into a dictator, and how dictators fall eventually by the power of the people.?

Artist Kapoor cancels China show over Ai detention (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) ? Renowned British sculptor Anish Kapoor has called off a planned exhibition in China over the ongoing detention of outspoken artist Ai Weiwei, his spokesman told The Art Newspaper.

The British Council had asked Kapoor to plan a show at Beijing's National Museum of China as part of next year's "UK Now" festival.

But the artist's spokesman confirmed Tuesday he was "not going to proceed in view of the detention of Ai Weiwei".

Ai, a constant thorn in the side of Chinese authorities, was detained in Beijing on April 3 as he tried to board a flight to Hong Kong.

He is under investigation for "economic crimes" and relatives of the artist say they do not know where he is.

The artists investigated school collapses in the 2008 Sichuan quake and conducted a "citizen's probe" into a Shanghai fire that killed 58 people last November.

His detention came as part of a major government crackdown on dissent as China's rulers in the wake of the anti-government protests sweeping through the Arab world.

Kapoor's involvement in the project at the newly renovated Tiananmen Square museum had already been thrown into doubt when he denounced Ai's detention as "barbaric".

Despite Kapoor's withdrawal, British Council chief executive Martin Davidson said he was hopeful that the project would go ahead.

"It is through cultural exchange that we best demonstrate the benefits of free artistic expression and build supportive links between people in the UK and China," he said.

Temporary Basketball Arena To Be Reused After 2012 London Olympics

The basketball arena that will be used during the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games in London has be completed, but it wasn't designed to be a lasting structure.

Construction began on the temporary arena back in October 2009, but the London Olympic committee says that it will be reused after the games are complete next year. Reused by whom and for what wasn't revealed.

The 12,000 seat arena features a steel frame that weighs in at a cool 1,000 metric tonnes, with a full 20,000 square meters of recyclable PVC stretched around it. As for what will happen to the arena once the Olympics are complete, a press release states:

"After the Games the venue will be dismantled by the contractors which built and own the temporary elements, with the option of potentially using elements of the arena at other UK and overseas events."

The basketball arena is the fourth Olympic structure to be completed so far.

Team Animal Kingdom still angry

Animal Kingdom jockey John Velazquez and Barry Irwin, head of the Team Valor International syndicate which owns the horse, were still fuming Sunday over the incident at the start of Saturday's Belmont Stakes that cost their colt, the 5-2 favorite, any chance of winning.

The Kentucky Derby winner was bumped hard a few strides out of the gate, clipped heels and stumbled, forcing Velazquez to lose his left stirrup ? effectively eliminating Animal Kingdom from the race.

"Mud didn't cost AK the Belmont," Irwin wrote on his Facebook page. "At the break, Isn't He Perfect came over at the break, intimidated Mucho Macho Man, who slammed into Animal Kingdom so hard that our colt nearly went down. Our jockey lost his left iron, which was not corrected until the turn. We never had a chance. Isn't He Perfect had no business being in this race and he screwed it up for a lot of horses. Classics are no place for amateurs."

Velazquez blamed Isn't He Perfect's rider, Rajiv Maragh, for causing the trouble.

"I was pretty mad [after the race]," he said. "I was so frustrated. How did that horse wind up on top of me four or five jumps out of the gate? Things like that shouldn't happen. It's stupidity."

Velazquez said he complained to the stewards about Maragh's ride. The jockeys and stewards will go over films of the race Wednesday.
